Marsala (Maissàla in dialect from the Arabic Marsa Ali = Ali port) with its 250 square miles in extent, is "City of Wine" from 1987.
Marsala has a rich cultural heritage and landscape. It rises on the ruins of Punic Lilybaeum (Lilibeum in Latin), from whose name comes the name "lilibetani" or marsalesi for its inhabitants. Its foundation is closely linked to that of Mothia, one of the islands of the Stagnone. Marsala was founded in VIII BC, and became a major Phoenician city. It represents the capital of the global Naval Archaeology, since in the Baglio Anselmi Museum are housed the remains of a punic ship, the only archaeological find of fighter craft in the world, dating back to 241 BC.
